From the Outings Chair

Carol Vellutini
Redwood Chapter Outings Chair

Time for winter outings. Some of you are new members and have asked for information on Sierra huts.

Warming Hut: Has been used in the past when we had to bail out of the other huts. Lies 1/2 mile behind and a couple of hundred feet above Clair Tappaan Lodge. Sleeps 15.

Peter Grubb Hut: 3 miles north of 1-80 at Donner Summit 800' elevation over first two miles to Castle Pass, then down 250' to the cabin at 7800'. Has a new outhouse. Sleeps 15.

Bradley Hut: Pole Creek 2 miles north of Squaw Valley; access is via Forest Road 8 gradually up abut 1500' over 5 miles to the hut at 7550'. Benson Hut is 4-5 miles to the northwest. Beautiful new hut/new outhouse. Sleeps 15.

Ludlow Hut: 7 miles up McKinney Creek to Richardson Lake. Total elevation gain is about 1000'; the cabin is at 7400'. Sourdough Hill and Lost Corner nearby. Very difficult to find parking. Group came back a new way this year along General Creek. Sleeps 15.

Benson Hut: 6 miles south of US 40 under the face of Mt. Anderson Peak. About 8300'. Completed in 1949. Starting at Sugar Bowl and then going up Mt. Lincoln and then on to the Pacific Crest Trail.

If you are signing up for winter trips, be sure you are prepared with the proper gear and a Sno-Park pass if necessary. We need more leaders for winter trips. Please consider being a leader in training for this year's trips.

A fond farewell to Sonoma Group leader Roger Lamb. He will be missed by all. Roger will be relocating to Washington. Sonoma Group will be having a farewell hike for Roger. Call me for info. Also relocated to Washington is Chard Lowden, who worked at Sonoma Outfitters in Santa Rosa and gave Sierra Club workshops. We will miss his advice.

Sierra Club is continuing to attract many people from outside of each group's area. We are known for our wonderful outings. Recruiting new members on outings directly benefits our Chapter and Group financially. Sierra Club has been leading outings for over 100 years. Please consider becoming a Sierra Club leader. Contact your local outing chair for information. Look at the Needles for training sessions.

Happy Holidays.
