Snowcamping Training Series Marilyn Smulyan | |
|
Application deadline: December 31, 2004 The Sierra Club's Bay Chapter Snowcamping Section is accepting applications for this winter's Snowcamping Training Series. This comprehensive course teaches you how to stay warm, dry and safe in winter conditions while experiencing the wonders of the Sierra backcountry. The entire program is based on a hands-on, participatory approach that involves sharing personal experiences and skills in a warm, cooperative atmosphere. It includes a mandatory, one day indoor training session - Orientation Day - and two trips, first out for one night and then out for two. There are only two requirements, you must complete our application form and have some prior backpacking experience. This winter, Orientation Day will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2005 in Oakland. The morning session will |
include an introductory slide show and films on avalanche safety and hypothermia. In the afternoon, you will meet your group and begin to prepare for your first outing. Our volunteers will bring backpacks filled with their own equipment and discuss what works and what doesn't in the winter. Some of the topics we'll cover include clothing, food, stoves and fuel, sleeping warm, first aid kits, boots, snow shoes, building snow shelters and winter navigation. This winter we are offering four adult sections, one family section (children must be 8 years old) and one section for alumni that have completed the course in a previous year. For more information, log on to our website at www.snowcamping.org or come to a free introductory, snowcamping clinic at the Santa Rosa REI store on Thursday, December 9th at 7 PM. |
