Lake Group Report
Nina Marino, Lake Group Chair | |
|
The Lake Group continues to be involved in promoting the issue of expanding wilderness areas in the county. U. S. Representative Mike Thompson held a "town hall" meeting a few weeks ago where a panel of local experts explained exactly what a wilderness area is and what activities can and cannot occur in such areas. The meeting was packed with both supporters and opponents. When Senator Boxer's bill is finally introduced, we'll all get to see which areas were chosen to be included. We look forward to another town hall meeting where all sides can then express their opinions regarding this surprisingly controversial issue. We're also encouraging our members to write letters to our state representatives to ask their support in securing permanent funding for the beautiful Black Forest property, on the side of Mt. Konocti, which was purchased by the Lake County Land Trust, with the generous financial support of many members of the community. We hope that the funds made available through Proposition 40 can go towards this project and that in the future, our group might participate in creating hiking trails in the forest. |
Speaking of hiking trails, our outings have been very successful and we would like to share our knowledge of the many splendid hiking and biking trails with the community at large, including visitors. A proposed project is to create a guide to these trails, including the proposed wilderness areas. We hope to encourage others to explore and enjoy (and ultimately protect) the wild places of Lake County. Got a favorite trail you'd like to add to the list? Call Nina at 279-4082. Take time this summer to take advantage of at least one of our upcoming outings and enjoy the spectacular countryside and great company. |
