From the Outings Chair

Carol Vellutini

I would like to welcome Gina Hitchcock and her husband Eric to the outings program. They trained at one of my new leaders sessions two years ago and now have some time to do family outings (their daughter is 5). This will be a wonderful chance for families with young children to go on an outing geared for them. Also Stephanie Faulkner is going through training and will have outings next newsletter. She will do conservation, family and interpretive walks. She is interested in recycling, water and wildlife issues, and Native American history. These will be offered from the Napa Group.

Good luck to John Mertes, North Group leader. He is leaving as a leader due to a busy schedule. He was active in the Crescent City Aleutian Goose Festival.

The first planning session for the winter outings was held. Jim Gannon, Roger Lamb, Paul Bozzo, and Steve Devoto. have agreed to lead winter backpack trips. If anyone else is interested in helping them as an assistant please call me ASAP as it is important to see the Sierra huts in the summer.

We, as usual, need help maintaining Benson Hut. Please consider signing up for the work parties. Also I would like to step down as the Benson Hut coordinator and would welcome someone to volunteer. Call for requirements. We will be having our first outing in the Gualala area. New leaders are needed for that area.

Napa and Solano need a Sierra Singles coordinator. You do not need to be a registered leader. Duties are finding a location for a monthly potluck and writing up a notice for the newsletter once every two months. It's a fun job.

See you on the trail. All of us are busy people, however our state is developing at a rapid rate. Find out what the local issues are and become involved. Remember "Our collective soul is tied to the earth, and any culture or civilization that ignores its responsibility to the earth itself is one that can not long endure. And so we have a responsibility.not only to ourselves, but to subsequent generations thatwe preserve what there is in all its pristine beauty." Rabbi Mel Hecht
