Overpopulation:
A Growing Concern

Jerry Kohl, Group Population Chair

Ben Zuckerman, an advocate of reducing population growth has been elected to the Sierra Club Board with the highest vote of any of the candidates. Zuckerman's candidate statement included comment on the Club's silence in it's publications on domestic and global population issues. The vote for Zuckerman may indicate an increased interest of club members in population growth as an environmental issue.

For up-to-date information on population issues you can now read the Sierra Club's Population Report on line at:http://www.sierraclub.org/population/reports/winter02/ An immediate issue warranting your action is Pres. Bush holding up $34 million in funding for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). This funding was approved by the House and Senate in December. Call the President at the White House, 202-456-1111 and encourage him to fully fund UNFPA. For more information contact Jerry Kohl, Group Population Chair, 579-6790.
