Many thanks to our July 22 crew who painted the new shed with recycled paint. Howard Hoffman brought his paint gunåç, Brian and Matt Hoffman and Jane Bogner helped paint the lower trim, Lamar Marutani climbed a ladder and painted the eaves. And thanks to Nancy McCoy and Christa Foerchtgott for sorting paper and watching out for the painters. Thanks to the weekday painting crew of Kenn Browne, Jane Bogner and Monte Simmons for finishing the job. Thanks also to Beverly McNeilly and Sarah Currerer

for staffing the recycling table at the Vallejo Farmers Market on Sept. 9.

 

VALCORE Community Recycling is our grass roots recycling center. It is run solely by 9 non-profit Solano County member groups (including your Sierra Club) who share in the sale of the materials. For a flyer with directions and more details, contact Jane Bogner (see below).

EXPERIENCE NATURE AND ART - October 7 Sabina Yates, a Painting and Drawing Teacher for many years at Santa Rosa Jr. College will be leading a Sierra Club beginning sketching hike. Anyone with an interest in learning to see more and learning to draw will be welcome. The Hike will be October 7th at 9:00 a.m. to noon. The group will meet

at Benicia Community Park (off Rose Drive) and take the Rollye Wiskerson trail. The emphasis will be lots of quick sketches as we take a short hike. Bring sketching supplies: water soluble pencil, 6B pencil, eraser, black permanent ink pen, sketch book or clip board with typing paper and folding stool. NEW SHED DEDICATION AND THANK YOU PARTY

VALCORE volunteers are putting the final touches on their new storage shed. A potluck party will be help on October 21 at noon to thank all the volunteer builders and donors of excess building materials for the project. Call Jane Bogner (see below) for more

Three non-Sierra Club hiking opportunities in Solano County:

Benicia's Day Hikers walk on alternate Saturdays, call 746-7385.

Vallejo's GVRD Adventure Hikers trek on Thursdays during the Spring and Fall, call 643-4468. The Bay Area Ridge Trail has occasional hikes in Solano County, call 643-4468 or log onto www.ridgetrail.org.

 

ROCKVILLE HILLS - NATURE WALK & POTLUCK PICNIC

Join Solano Group for a short nature walk on Saturday, October 14 at 9 am. Park naturalist Dan Tilley will lead the way with stories about the park. Wear sturdy shoes, a hat and bring water. There will also be POTLUCK PICNIC at NOON Bring your favorite dish to share and reusable picnic ware. Solano Group will furnish beverages. A compost bucket and recycling bin will be available. Let's make this a "No Trash" picnic.

Directions: From I-80 take the Suisun Valley Road exit and drive past Solano College to the light at Rockville Hills Road. Turn left and watch for park on left. Parking is slim so consider catching a ride with a friend.

Save San Pablo Baylands has just received approval to begin bi-monthly cleanup of a 4-mile stretch of Highway 37 between Skaggs Island Road and Sears Point, that crosses Sonoma and Tolay Creeks in Solano and Sonoma Counties. This portion of the State Route borders the San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge, California Department of Fish & Game managed lands and private haying operations and duck clubs. Cleanup will take place early on a weekend morning when there is little traffic along the corridor.

Volunteers will view a safety training video, wear safety gear provided by Caltrans and work in teams. To register for the next Adopt-A-Highway cleanup, call Myrna Hayes, 707.557-.9816 or email her at myrnahay@pacbell.net.

The 5th Annual Northern San Francisco Bay Flyway Festival takes place January 19-21, 2001. The Family Wildlife Exploration Day, exhibits, vendors, art show and short guided walks will take place on Mare Island in Vallejo. Sierra Club Groups and other organizations are welcome to co-sponsor the event by exhibiting or offering outings, birding excursions and hikes throughout the north bay region and making actual monetary contributions.
