A sorted affair
By Jane Bogner, Solano Group
The holidays are upon us. Try not to get carried away
and purchase fancy DISPOSABLE party ware. Think "green" when
planning your next party to help save our landfills. Stay
small or dive in, but do something to reduce waste at your
next party.
GREEN PARTY PLANNER
BIG PARTY
RENT dishes, cutlery, glasses, serving platters, and
linens. Ask caterers to provide reusable dishes. BORROW
dishes, tables and chairs from local clubs or churches. A
donation to their coffers will help their cause. PURCHASE
quaint dishes, glasses or serving plafters at local thrift
stores or garage sales. PURCHASE pin-on Name Badge Holders
and collect at the end of the party.
REDEEM your CRV beer and soda containers for money at
VALCORE Recycling or your local recycling center. RECYCLE
glass bottles, #1 PET plastic bottles, clean aluminum foil,
foil pans, steel cans, brown paper bags and cardboard boxes
curbside or at local recycling centers. RECYCLE plastic
grocery bags at local grocery stores.
WINE BOTTLE CORKS can be tossed in your yard waste
recycling barrel.
DONATE - SAVE - SHARE
DONATE leftover food to local shelters or agencies.
SAVE left-over wines for cooking. WASH plastic serving
platters, glasses and cutlery to reuse. BRING empty
containers to take home party leftovers that may have gone
into the trash.
COMPOST paper napkins, all non-meat food scraps and
coffee grounds. Plain paper plates can be torn into strips
and added to your compost. Remember to recycle and/or reuse
party goods so that only trash goes into our landfills.
VALCORE hosted a party for 65 people recently. After
the party, we had only 8 ounces of waste which consisted of
plastic food wrappers.
